Do I need a permit to remove a tree? — check before you cut.

Most homeowners assume a tree on their own property is theirs to remove. Often it is — but not always, and the rules genuinely change from one city to the next across Waterloo Region. A quick check beforehand saves a real headache.

Why permits exist

Municipalities protect tree canopy because it's tied to stormwater, shade, air quality and property values. So many cities regulate the removal of certain trees — usually by size (trunk diameter above a set threshold), by species (some protect specific or heritage trees), or by location (boulevard and city-owned trees are off-limits to private removal).

It varies by municipality

Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph each have their own by-laws, and they get updated. A backyard tree that needs no paperwork in one township might require an application a few minutes' drive away. Trees on the city boulevard — the strip between sidewalk and road — are typically the municipality's, not yours, even if you've mowed around them for years.

The five-minute version: check your city's tree by-law before you book a removal, especially for a large or street-facing tree.

What to check before you book

We can help you sort it out

Part of our job is knowing the local landscape — we deal with these by-laws across the region every week, and we'll flag it during the quote if your tree looks like one that needs an application before we touch it. Get in touch and we'll point you in the right direction before any work is scheduled.
