How deep does stump grinding go? — it depends on the spot.

It's the most common stump question we get, and the honest answer is: as deep as your plans for the spot require. There's a standard, and then there's "deeper, because of what you're doing next."

The usual depth

Most stump-grinding jobs come out somewhere between 6 and 12 inches below grade, with about 8 inches as our everyday standard. That's plenty for a lawn: it puts the top of the stump well under the soil line, lets us lay grindings or topsoil over it, and gives you a flat, seed-ready surface with no wood showing.

When we go deeper

The right depth really depends on what's going where the tree used to be:

Tell us what's going in the spot next, and we'll set the depth to match. That one question changes the whole job.

What grinding doesn't do

Grinding takes care of the stump and the roots within reach, but the deeper lateral root system stays in the ground and breaks down naturally over a few years. For nearly every lawn and garden in Kitchener-Waterloo that's exactly what you want; the rare exception is a full build-over, where the ground itself needs to be clear.

Ask us about your spot and we'll recommend the right depth before we start.
